Ishqedarriyaan opened to mixed reviews and responses. Times of India gave 1.5/5 stars to the film saying, "Evelyn Sharma for a change is not seen in skimpy outfits but her acting stays consistently poor, Mahaakshay is convincing but the film is way too tedious for you to sit through it. Music and locations are probably the best part about this film. Unfortunately, everything else is mediocre. Overall it turns out to be inconsequential in return. Despite decent production values, Ishqedarriyaan fails to click as it is way too cliched. Conventional is fine as long as it leaves some impact on you as an audience, which doesn't happen here. Paloma Sharma of Rediff wrote "The trouble with Ishqedarriyaan is that it isn't even bad enough to be good. It's just plain old dull. Lost in a world of its own, the film forgets to engage the viewer. The makers of the film might need to offer free tea at the screenings to give the audience an incentive to stay awake. The kindest thing I can say about Ishqedarriyaan is that it is yawn worthy." and gave the film 1.5/5 stars. The Indian Express gave 1/5 stars and wrote "Mahakshay returns in a badly-written romance, which makes you wonder why anyone would want to repeat the same mistakes. Ishqedarriyan’' features the age-old triangle of rich boy- poor girl- and third party, in a leaden plot that never takes off. We know who’s going to win fair maiden in the end, but we have to wade through two hours and more of sheer tiresomeness to get there. Who is this film made for? Book my Show stated that "The love story is sweet, but cliched! An overdose of emotional drama makes this romantic saga a bore. A loose script, below par acting and cliched romantic scenes, Ishqedarriyaan is a love saga that will bore you for two long hours! The film despite starting on a good note, loses grip after the first fifteen minutes. The Indian Talks gave 4/5 stars to the film stating that "Evelyn can be seen in every third scene of the movie which makes it little boring the whole movie revolves around her. There is complete lack of the other sides of the story which is much needed with this idea. No doubt the performance of the actors are next to awesome.Sunday, 31 May 2015

I had watched the
prequel and loved it. It was a perfect film and a breath of fresh air in
the turgid environment of Bollywood. So when the sequel came, we booked
our tickets a week in advance and waited eagerly for the feast we were
sure of.
If you are not seeking hundred percent verisimilitude the film meets all your expectations. We were in a late late night show (in a foreign country) and the theatre was full. People were clapping, hooting with laughter and enjoyment and were thoroughly engaged with the film.
The film is about what happens to Tanu and Manu four years down the line. In that, it's quite predictable. Disappointment, resentment, regret, a desire to turn the clock back -all these describe the madcap Tanu (Kangana)who makes her way home after getting her husband, Manu, thrown into a mental asylum for being boring and callous like most husbands. What follows is a mad trajectory of passive marital rage interspersed with a clever balance of realism, comedy and pathos. This is done so well and so effortlessly that you are carried along, now laughing, now upset, now understanding, now sad, now nodding your head in recognition at some situation or dialogue.
Without giving away the story, suffice it to say that Aanand Rai has proved that the public is ready to accept an indie film provided it's honest, original and clean. Here, Kangana steers the film and the rest of the cast perform seamlessly. Madhavan plays second fiddle to Kangana but with perfect élan. Deepak (Pappi) is our new Johnny Walker, fresh, natural and without the contortions of our so called stand ups. I love Jimmy Shergill and feel sad that he is visible only in glimpses.
Yes, Banno, your swagger is immensely sexy, attractive, rib tickling and I am rooting for ya. You go, gal!

Thank you Mani Ratnam
for this very timely return to form. OK Kanmani( Such a nice title) is a
beautiful love story about the modern age relationships. The dialogues
and the settings do bring back flashes of Alaipayuthey and Aaytha
Ezhuthu. This isn't a perfect movie. There were some scenes that were
cringe worthy(The Loopie App song/moment) . But despite these minor
flaws, this movie is a triumph. A celebration. Performances by the cast
were terrific . Dulquer is a capable leading man(despite his limited
acting range). Nithya Menon was terrific and frighteningly real. But
it's Prakash Raj and Leela Samson who steals the show as the older
couple . The film moves to a different when they are in the frame.
Overall, a beautiful movie that will appeal to the classes.

When I saw the trailer
of NH10, it seemed just like one of those road movies that you have seen
several times before. You know the ones where a couple or group of
friends leave on a trip and counter a killer on a remote road who chases
and kills them one by one! As it turned out NH10 was anything but
usual.
The film starts off with Meera (Anushka) and Arjun (Neil) heading off on a weekend getaway. Meera has been traumatized by an event that happened a few days before, so the trip is more to get her back to her usual self. While stopping for lunch at a highway dhaba, they notice a group trashing an eloping couple and try to intervene. A few scenes later, they notice the same group on a remote road and Neil just on a whim, rather stupidly decides to teach them a lesson. The chain of events this decision leads them through, forms rest of the story.
This film is one of those few ones where you will find it hard to find any faults. Everything about the film right from the gripping screenplay, the near perfect acting performances (even from actors in brief roles),cinematography and background score are so perfectly in place. The director Navdeep Singh needs to be commended immensely for delivering a suspenseful gripping drama while at the same time highlighting the topical issue of honor killing and how entrenched caste is in the rural India's psyche. The honor killing sequence in particular is so raw and real that it sends a chill down your spine.
The film is interspersed throughout with subtleties which capture the sad and tragic realities of urban and rural India beautifully. The cop blaming the victim by asking why Anushka was out late at night when she tries to lodge a complaint; The xenophobia towards people from other states;the scenes with the brother and his friends capturing the crude patriarchy that exists in rural India etc are fine examples. The scene which takes the cake is the one where the rural cop mentions that Manu and Ambedkar had the same ideology!
Another common perception that prevails amongst most of us is that, only men are responsible for these horrible happenings. While this may be true in most cases, the film in a very hard hitting way conveys that women are equally to be blamed.
Its always heartening to watch a movie which is entertaining and conscience provoking at the same time. NH10 is a fine example and walks this tightrope with great élan.

Following the current
questionable trend of making weak sequels of some well made films, here
is another of those attempts made by a different team trying to en-cash
the cult status of its original released a decade back in 2004.
To mention its few merits, Nana Patekar once again proves to be the major pull in the film playing Sadhu Agashe, the encounter specialist and it all begins on a promising note exactly from where they left it open-ended in the original. The initial 20 minutes set the mood in with few notable punchy dialogues and an energetic background score coming at the right moments. But as soon as Nana joins the force again and begins his encounter missions as per his own questionable style, the film goes back to all routine standards with nothing new to offer to the viewers in terms of storyline, execution or performances.
The camera-work awfully tries to imitate RGV in an amateurish manner throughout the film and Nana Patekar starts sleepwalking in his act unexpectedly post the enjoyable initial moments. All the cuss words in its dialogues get muted as per the new guidelines of the Censor board, brutally hurting their final impact quite annoyingly and the climax doesn't turn out to be anything exciting or innovative at all as compared to its impressive original (though written with all good intentions against the corrupt politicians).
In short, debutant director Aejaz Gulab fails to materialize on the ground already there and delivers a below average film with only a few worth mentioning features namely the well written lines, background score and action sequences. However I strong feel that its theme music should have been used repeatedly in the backdrop instead of playing the unnecessary variations diluting the overall effect.
Moreover with just OK performances coming from seasoned actors such as Vikram Gokhale, Ashutosh Rana, Dilip Prabhawalkar, Raj Zutshi and Gul Panag, AB TAK CHHAPPAN 2 (a song-less thriller) can surely be rated as a great opportunity missed by the team to move one step ahead than its part one despite having the same Sadhu Agashe in the cast.
